Days 5 and 6: Agrigento
and Roman Mosaics

In college, I went to Greece and toured many ancient sites, which were beautiful. In Sicily, I never expected such well-preserved ruins! Agrigento's Valley of the Temples — the largest, best-preserved collection of ancient Greek buildings outside Greece itself — and the archaeological museum were amazing, but that was thanks to another knowledgeable guide. I still find it amazing to be looking at pottery and rare white vases made in the 7th century B.C.

Villa Romana Casalle

I had been looking forward to this day for a while. The story goes that the Villa Romana Casalle was buried in a mudslide, preserving the villa's mosaics. It is still amazing to me crafts person did all this by hand. It also reminded us that Sicily was colonized by the Romans. In the end, we were surrounded by the world's richest and most colorful collection of Roman mosaics — including the time-bending "bikini girls" mosaic.
